Science Courses

Earth Science – The Physical Setting (9th)

Credit: 1

Topics to be covered include: weather, rocks, minerals, water, pollution, earthquakes, and astronomy. Lab component required.

Biology – The Living Environment (10th)

Credit: 1

Pre-Req: Earth Science. The goals of this course include: an introduction to general biological principles, to advance inductive thinking by inquiry approach, to maximize individualized approach through students projects, attitudinal and affective domains given high priority, provide integrated awareness of the natural world, firsthand analysis of plants and animals, the use of terminology as a tool rather than an end in itself. Topics to be covered include ecological relationships, energy relationships, reproduction and development, and patterns of inheritance. Students are required to take lab and all labs must be submitted in order to be eligible to take the Regents exam.

Honors Biology – The Living Environment (10th)

Credit: 1

Pre-Req: Earth Science average of 90% in class and on NYS regents. This course covers the curriculum mandated by NYS for the Regents Living Environment lecture and lab. The student will take the June Regents exam. This course is designed for the student who has shown exemplary work in previous science courses. The topics covered will be more in-depth and at a faster pace than the non-honors class. This class is for the student that has the maturity and intelligence for a more rigorous course. The goal is to hopefully have the student take AP/CHS Biology as a junior or senior.

Community Chemistry – (10th-12th)

Credit: 1

Pre-Req: Successful completion of one Regents Level ScienceEarth Science and the Living Environment This class will be taught at a slower pace and less in depth than Regents Chemistry. Course will focus on the study of Matter and Energy changes associated with changes in Matter. Topics covered may include: Atomic Structure, Bonding, the Periodic Table, Kinetics and Equilibrium, Acids-Bases, Reduction-Oxidation, and Organic Chemistry. Chemistry is a required class for all science majors in college as well as many science-related majors such as Nursing and Engineering.

Regents Chemistry – The Physical Setting (10th-12th)

Credit: 1

Pre-Req: Successful completion of Earth Science and the Living Environment; successful completion of Algebra. Chemistry is the study of Matter and Energy changes associated with changes in Matter. Topics covered include: Atomic Structure, Bonding, the Periodic Table, Kinetics and Equilibrium, Acids-Bases, Reduction-Oxidation, and Organic Chemistry. Chemistry is a required class for all science majors in college as well as many science-related majors such as Nursing and Engineering.

Physics – The Physical Setting (11th-12th)

Credit: 1

Pre-Req: Successful completion of Algebra and Geometry; Successful completion of Two Regents Science courses. Recommended Pre-Req: Successful completion of Trigonometry (can also be a co-requisite). Physics is the study of the fundamental interactions between Matter and Energy. Topics include: mechanics, Energy, Waves, Electricity, Magnetism, Nuclear and Modern Physics. The course is very Math intensive and involves high levels of problem solving ability. Physics is required for all college science majors as well as most Computer Science, Engineering, and Pre-medical majors.

Anatomy & Physiology (10th-12th)

Credit: 1

Pre Req: Passed Regents Living Environment or Honors Biology. The purpose and philosophy of this course is to reinforce and expand basic principles of biology that were introduced in Regents Living Environment or Honors Biology. It also goes into depth concerning human health and medical issues. Lecture, theory, labs, and practical applications are combined to give a proper overview of human anatomy and physiology.

This course is recommended to many students for a variety of reasons. These reasons include the student that has an interest in a medical profession. This could include future goals including nursing, rad tech, physical therapy, medical doctor, etc. This course also is suited for the student that just wants a better understanding of their own health. This is not a Regents course but can be used for the third science for graduation.

The content of this course is great for a student who is aiming for a medical career but a lot of this course is graded on effort and is a great course to take for a student who needs a third science.

AP/CHS Biology – (11th-12th)

Credit: 1 / FMCC CHS Credit: 4 (BIO 171)

Pre-Req: Exemplary work in Regents Biology and Regents Chemistry 90 average preferred, teacher recommendation accepted. This course is approved as and Advanced Placement course by the College Board. In May the student is eligible to take the AP Biology exam. It is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory biology course. This course is also affiliated with Fulton-Montgomery Community College and upon successful completion the student earns 4 college credits. This course covers topics that are regularly covered in a college biology course and differs from high school biology with respect to the kind of textbook used, the range and depth of topics covered, the kind of laboratory work done by students, and the time and effort required of the students. In addition, the labs will be equivalent of college labs. The course of study will consist of 25% Molecules and Cells, 25% Heredity and Evolution and 50% Organisms and Populations. Primary emphasis should be on developing an understanding of concepts rather than memorizing terms and technical details. This is a fast paced, rigorous course. The student can use the course for AP credit or FMCC credit.
