Spanish I (9th)

Spanish I provides an introduction to speaking, reading, writing and comprehending a modern foreign language. Students learn to recognize the various parts of speech and work with the grammatical structure of Spanish. Extensive practical vocabulary, Hispanic culture and current events are also explored.

Spanish II (9th-10th)

Pre-Req: Spanish 8 or Spanish I. Spanish II students will be expected to speak, write, read, and understand spoken Spanish in this class. Vocabulary themes will include school activities, hobbies, and after school activities, daily routines, clothing and fashion, the city, childhood toys and games, and holiday celebrations. Grammar topics will include a review of the present tense, the preterite tense, the imperfect tense, and other relevant topics. Hispanic cultures will be discussed and analyzed in order to further student understanding of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Assessment will include homework, assignments, classroom participation, quizzes, tests, projects and writing assignments. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be prepared for Spanish III.

Spanish III (10th-11th)

Pre-Req: Spanish II. Spanish III students will be expected to speak, read, write and understand spoken Spanish at a higher level. Vocabulary themes include natural disasters, accidents, the hospital, heroic acts and rescue, sporting events, movies and television, Latin and outdoor cooking and hobbies, traveling abroad, tourism, future professions and the Earth and environment. Grammar topics include and expand on the present, preterite, imperfect, progressive, subjunctive and future tenses of verbs, including commands and participles. Assessments will include homework, classroom participation, quizzes, tests, projects and writing assignments. NY State has joined the effort to align courses with National Standards. Spanish embraces these five standards of Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. The course emphasizes acquisition of vocabulary, the ability to comprehend formal and informal spoken language, the ability to compose organized passages, and demonstrate an awareness of cultural diversity both historically and currently. This completes the students third credit of a foreign language. Upon choice, the student may continue on to Spanish IV/V with a 90% on the comprehensive exam and a 90% average.

CHS Spanish IV (11th-12th)

Credit: .5 / FMCC CHS Credit: 3 (SPA 201)

Pre-Req: 90% on comprehensive Exam and 90% average in Spanish III. This elective course is designed for those who are motivated to work independently as well as in class to advance their Spanish speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Course content will include: Reading Literature Short stories, Poetry, Current Events, Listening to different genres of music, Latin American Art appreciation, and Grammar.

CHS Spanish V (11th-12th)

Credit: .5 / FMCC CHS Credit: 3 (SPA 202)

This course will continue to actively broaden students’ oral, aural, reading comprehension and writing skills at college level. Reading will be from classic and contemporary sources. Writing will be for grammatical accuracy as well as creativity. Culture is inherent in all materials used in order to deepen knowledge and foster appreciation.
