Lending a helping hand; Meet Olivia Wulforst

Sometimes the best way to help others is to be kind and know what to do in a time of need. Meet F-F Middle School fifth grader Olivia Wulforst. This school year, Olivia had the patience, determination, and knowledge to assist her younger sister during a medical episode on the school bus.

After hearing calls from her other students on the bus that her sister was not feeling well, Olivia immediately jumped into action, knowing how she could help her during her time of need. First, she alerted the bus driver and then sat next to her sister remembering the steps to help her relax until they could get home to their parents. With her preparation and knowing exactly what to do, she was able to keep her sister safe, calm, and back in the hands of their parents.

Olivia was the focal point of this situation taking a positive turn, and with the help of the bus driver, bus driver operator and the school nurse – her sister was able to get the care she needed. Today, we sat down with Olivia to learn how to stay safe and calm during an emergency.

How did you learn the steps to help someone in need?

My parents taught me how to react if something happened to my sister. They taught me how to sit with her and calm her down. They encouraged me to talk with her and try to get her to say words or her name to calm down. By doing that, she can relax.

How do you practice ensuring safety and kindness to others?

I try to treat others how I would like to be treated. My parents taught us to show everyone kindness and respect.

What should your friends and classmates learn to help someone?

Stay calm and help others where you can. Let an adult know what is happening.
