Code of Conduct: Safety Guidelines and Expectations for Students Using School Transportation

  1. Be on time at the bus stop (five to ten minutes before the scheduled pick up).
  2. Behave in an orderly manner at the bus stop.
  3. Wait at least 15 feet from where the bus will stop and away from traffic so that the driver can see you.
  4. Wait for a complete stop before crossing the road or attempting to board the bus.
  5. Cross the bus at least ten feet in front of the bus and wait for the driver’s hand signal before crossing. ALWAYS look both ways before crossing.
  6. Board and exit the bus in an orderly fashion.
  7. Stay in your seat, facing forward, and in your own space.
  8. Help to keep the bus clean.
  9. No eating or drinking on the bus (increase in allergy issues and choking possibilities).
  10. Keep head, hands, and objects inside the windows.
  11. Keep track of your belongings and check your seat before exiting.
  12. Respect the property of others, including the bus.
  13. Refrain from using profane, lewd, vulgar or abusive language or gestures. (includes loud or inappropriate music or cell phone conversations.
  14. Refrain from actions and activities that may distract the driver.
  15. Follow all directions from the driver or monitor.
  16. Parents of students who are experiencing health related  issues or exhibiting symptoms such as; vomiting, fever, rash, open sores, head lice, etc. should contact the school nurse prior to using district transportation or until symptoms subside or condition is diagnosed.

As per NYS Department of Transportation policy, all school bus aisles must remain clear of objects and bus drivers must have an unobstructed view of the rear of the bus. To ensure safety, students cannot bring large objects on the bus that would violate these measures. This includes large musical instruments that could obstruct views and could become projectiles if there is a crash or sudden stop.

Animals are prohibited from being transported.

Riding the bus is a privilege. For the safety of all, it is imperative that children obey the rules. There are three levels of infractions:

Level 1: A misbehavior that represents a minor infraction.

Level 1 Examples

  1. Loud or inappropriate language
  2. Eating or drinking on the bus
  3. Leaving a mess on the bus
  4. Teasing/name calling
  5. Standing or changing seats while the bus is in motion

Level 1 Consequences

  1. Verbal Warning
  2. Behavior is documented and parent is notified
  3. Begin progressive loss of bus privilege

Level 2:  A misbehavior whose frequency or seriousness tends to diminish the driver’s authority or if continued would pose a threat to the safety of the students and driver.

Level 2 Examples

  1. Using obscene language
  2. Behaving in a way that is deemed to be bullying
  3. Running around the bus/climbing over seats
  4. Throwing objects
  5. Refusal to follow the driver’s or monitor’s direction
  6. Minor damage/vandalism (e.g. writing on seats)

Level 2 Consequences

  1. Behavior is documented and parent is notified
  2. Progressive loss of bus privilege
  3. Parent/Student/Administrator conference

Level 3: A misbehavior whose consequences incur monetary damage or poses a threat to the health and safety of others.

Level 3 Examples

  1. Serious vandalism (e.g. cutting seats)
  2. Fighting on the bus
  3. Opening emergency exits
  4. Throwing an object at the bus monitor or monitor
  5. Disrespectful behavior toward the driver or monitor that includes the use of profanity and inappropriate gestures
  6. Possession of a weapon, drugs, or alcohol

Level 3 Consequences

  1. Immediate loss of bus privilege
  2. Suspension from school (ISS and/or OSS)
  3. Long term loss of bus privilege
  4. Referral to the Superintendent’s office
