The Fonda-Fultonville Central School District is launching a new “Breakfast After the Bell” program starting on Monday, Feb. 4 in both the elementary and middle schools. This program will enable students to purchase and eat breakfast when and where it is most convenient for them. FFCS received more than $8,000 in grants from Kellogg to buy the equipment needed to make this program possible.
All students currently have the opportunity to eat breakfast in the school cafeterias during a short time frame before school starts. The time necessary to purchase food, consume it in the cafeteria, dispose of trash and return trays is not always convenient for students.
But with the new breakfast-to-go program, students will also be able to purchase breakfast items off of mobile carts and bring them to their classrooms. The district’s goals are to improve students’ access to a healthy breakfast every day, and to give them more time to get their food and eat it.
FFCS would like its students to take advantage of this service. Studies show that children who eat breakfast have better memory recall, improved attentiveness and cognition, and perform better academically than their peers who don’t eat breakfast.
How does it work?
At the elementary school, the carts will be located outside of the cafeteria, where students will continue to eat breakfast. If students arrive to school after the cafeteria is closed, they have the option to eat breakfast in their classrooms, even after the school day has started.
At the middle school, the carts will be located at the school entryway for students who arrive to school early. The carts will then move throughout the hallways to give students an opportunity to grab breakfast as they arrive. Students will continue to have the opportunity to eat their breakfast in the cafeteria. If students arrive to school after the cafeteria is closed, they have the option to eat breakfast in their classrooms, even after the school day has started.
Breakfast will also be made available after school begins outside of the school offices, so students who arrive late can eat. The carts will be available until 8:10 a.m. every day.
How much does it cost? Is it free if a student receives free or reduced-price lunch?
Breakfast costs $1.20. If a student qualifies for free or reduced price lunch, they are automatically eligible for free or reduced-price breakfast. Students who receive free and reduced price meals are not identified. Students will continue to use their ID numbers to make food purchases.
Can parents apply for free and reduced-price meals?
Parents can apply for free or reduced-price meals anytime during the school year. Forms are available on the school website at https://www.fondafultonvilleschools.org/services/food-services/. What kind of food will be available on the carts?
The daily breakfast menu includes a variety of bagel choices and toppings, cold cereals, homemade muffins, and a rotating menu of hot breakfast sandwiches, waffles, pancakes, breakfast pizzas and other homemade items. There are a variety of smoothies, yogurt parfaits, fruit, juice and milk choices as well. All breakfast items will be served in a paper bag or on paper trays for minimal cleanup.
