|
Below
are photos from our October 17th Kickoff for Saddle Up and Read,
Bookaroo!, our school-wide reading program. Thanks to Ahrianna Fleres,
Cookie Monster, the Fleres Family Farm and the Joyce Family for making
this event possible. Thank you Mrs. Henry for supporting literacy and
being brave enough to ride Cookie Monster!

2008-2009 School-wide Reading Program
|
Get your best saddle and your
ten-gallon hats ready, cowpokes! We are going to "Saddle Up and
Read, Bookaroos!" during the 2008-2009 school year. The Character
Education Committee can't wait to saddle up for our reading kickoff on
Friday, October 17th. We are also conducting a T-shirt fundraising
early in September. The monies raised will assist in funding
school-wide reading activities throughout the year. Mrs. Henry will be
sending a fundraiser flyer with your child's welcome letter. The flyer
should be arriving in the mail by mid-August.
Families are encouraged to
read nightly with their children. Students can read on their own or be
read to, or pair read with a sibling, relative, or parent. Get in the
habit of reading... it makes a world of difference for ALL students.
The following are reading recommendations:
K: 10
minutes per night/250 per month
1st and 2nd:
15 minutes per night/ 360 per month
3rd and 4th: 20 minutes per
night/480 per month
Each
month this year, the top reader in each homeroom class will have their
picture placed on the classroom door in a "Wanted Reader"
frame. The top class with the most reading minutes will receive a
special treat from Mrs. Henry each month. Trustworthiness counts when
filling our the student reading logs. Support your child's positive
reading growth by reading 5 - 7 nights per week.

Reading
Support Services
Now is the
time to make a difference... research shows just reading as few as six
books over the summer vacations will help your child. Students who read
over the summer tend to be more prepared for the upcoming school year, so
get out a book and read to and with your child.
Early in
September students will be assessed in reading. Once results are reviewed
by the principal, reading specialists, classroom teachers, and the reading
coach, reading support schedules and reading groups will be created.
Students may receive assistance in or out of class by the reading
specialist. Students have an overwhelmingly positive experience with the
small group assistance they receive. Small groups provide for immediate
feedback from the reading specialist. We are extremely fortunate to provide
your child with reading support services. Parents will receive letters by mid-October
if their child is receiving reading support services.
If
you have any questions, please contact the reading specialist listed on
your parent letter, or you may call me directly at 853-3332 x 500 5 or you
can send an email to swolf@ffcsd.org.
Thanks,
Sue Wolf
What is a Reading Coach?
A reading coach assists classroom
teachers, reading specialists, and the principal in providing the best
reading resources for students. I have several roles which include:
visiting classrooms, collecting and analyzing student data, disseminating
reading information and research, providing instruction in and
troubleshooting reading/literacy technology, mediating student and reading
program discussions, as well as scheduling concerns for the benefit of the
child, troubleshooting reading databases, promoting reading, and ordering
and disseminating reading materials, among other jobs.
