Recyclable
races finish Race Into Reading
What happens when you collect parts from old
toys, food and packaging containers, glue, and paint, then add
some help from Mom or Dad, and lots of ingenuity? You get a
school-full of recyclable race cars!
Elementary school students built and raced
recyclable racecars to celebrate the end of this year's Race
Into Reading theme. The rules were simple. Build a car from any
recycled material. The only prohibition was students could not
use a ready built car like a MatchBox or HotWheels car.
The finished products were as unique as the
students. Chassis were built of beverage and shampoo containers.
Wheels were often taken from other toy vehicle, but one student
even used four baseballs for wheels!
Each grade gathered to run the cars down a
plywood ramp. The car that traveled the greatest distance was
declared the grade winner. Winners gathered for the championship
in the elementary school gymnasium. Amidst the screams of their
respective supporters, grade winners nervously released their
cars down the ramp
