Film as Literature
In English 9 and 10, we
use film regularly as literature. Film has the same elements as
literature (i.e. theme, symbolism, characterization, plot,
conflict, setting, etc.), and is useful in developing skills
that can also be applied to the written word. Film is not used
for entertainment, but instead as another means to develop
analytical skills. Some of the films we cover include:
9th
The Birds (compare/contrast film and literature)
Romeo and Juliet (play in live action)
The Miracle Worker (attitudes/roles toward education)
10th
Castaway (theme of starting civilization)
Julius Caesar (compare/contrast)
