Famous
children's author visits library
What does it take to write a children's book?
Who draws the pictures? Where do the ideas for a story come
from?
Fonda Elementary School students learned the
answers to those questions and more during a visit by children's
author Iza Trapani on Monday, June 1. Ms. Trapani met with each
class for one hour in the school library reading her books,
singing, drawing, answering questions, and autographing books.
Ms. Trapani was born in Poland and emigrated to
the United States when she was just seven years old. She learned
her first English by reading a book of Mother Goose nursery
rhymes. Those early years find their way into her writing. Her
books are filled with rhymes and her subjects often include a
bit of her Polish heritage.
To the delight of the children, she read some of
her books often with music playing in the background. One of the
highlights was creating an original illustration using the
children's suggestions. The group of first graders began by
asking her to draw a mouse and a birthday cake. The picture
slowly expanded to include balloons, gifts, a birthday sign, and
more mice.

At the end of the hour, she personalized books
for every student who had purchased one.
"This was a wonderful opportunity for the
students to come face to face with successful author," said Mrs.
Brown. "She has written and illustrated 20 books and has
illustrated five more."
Mrs. Brown had met the author at a similar event
several years ago at the Gloversville elementary school. Mrs.
Brown knew that our students would enjoy meeting an author, so
she approached the Fonda-Fultonville PTA. The PTA provided the
funds to bring Ms. Trapani to our school. Thank you to everyone
who helped make this a special day!
