4Mrs. Briggs' Fourth Grade

Social Studies

I teach social studies for our class and Mrs. Zajaceskowski's class.

We will be studying New York State history in fourth grade. Some topics that we will be discussing are, Geography of New York and the United States, Native Americans, Exploration of the New World, Colonists/Revolutionary War, Industries and Inventions, Civil War, and  Government.

Currently Studying:

New York State's Early People

Unit:  1

Chapter: 2

Included in this chapter:

New York's First People

Native Americans of New York

The Iroquois League

We also began our U.S. Map Unit:

We have begun to study the names and placement of each state in the United States. For the rest of the year we will be practicing locating all fifty states. Tests will be given after ten states have been introduced. For example, I introduced five states today (11-3-08) and an additional five states will be introduced next week.  In the next couple of weeks (date to be announced), there will be a test on the first ten states. Next month, I will introduce ten more states. The second test will encompass all twenty states, and so on. Your child was given a map to label. This map will be the map he or she will use for the entire year and should be kept in the homework folder. He or she was also given a blank map to assist in studying at home.
