Elementary Gears up for “Operation Safe Child”
Fonda-Fultonville Elementary, in conjunction
with the New York State Police, will sponsor Operation SAFE
Child Days, on February 10, 11 and 12, 2009, to raise awareness
about child safety. During these dates, all children that
have signed permission forms will have their pictures taken and
given a Operation SAFE Child ID Card.
Operation SAFE Child was initiated to emphasize
the importance of parents always knowing their child’s
biographical information and carrying a current photo of the
child. The program has developed into a multi-pronged campaign
aimed at teaching parents and guardians three key components to
keeping children safe in today’s world:
-
Know your Child’s Information by obtaining a
SAFE CHILD ID card
-
Know your Child’s Friends by learning about
Internet safety
-
Know your Neighborhood by using the New York
State Sex Offender Registry
The Sex Offender Registry allows the public
access, via the Internet, to obtain information about sex
offenders living within our community.
For information on internet safety, explore our
School Resource Officer’s webpage or Netsmartz.org . There is
information there for all ages.
The New York State Police is an active
participant in the Operation SAFE Child program. After receiving
a signed permission from the child’s parent/legal guardian, the
State Police collects pertinent information about the child and
issues a Safe Child ID card for the parents’ safekeeping. The
child’s information is transferred to New York State Division of
Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), where it will be stored until
DCJS is notified that the child is missing. Once notification is
made, DCJS will make the child’s information available and
increase the possibility of bringing the missing child home
unharmed.
The elementary students received information on
Friday, January 9, that should have brought home to their
parents/legal guardian. Included in the information was a
permission slip that must be signed and returned to their
teacher by January 23, to allow the child to participate.
