First and second graders color and searn about
bicycle safety
March is “National Brain Injury Awareness
Month.” The Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS)
collaborated with the New York State Police and other local
police agencies to bring the Tenth Annual “Design Your Own
Helmet” Contest to all first and second graders in Montgomery,
Fulton and Schoharie Counties.
The contest offers a “teachable moment” to speak
with the kids about the importance of using a helmet to protect
their brains while enjoying bicycling, roller skating, roller blading, skateboarding, and scootering. Essentially, teaching
them…if they are strapping wheels to their feet, they need to be
strapping a helmet to their head.
New York State law requires all children under
the age of 14 to wear a helmet if they are riding a bicycle,
roller skating, roller blading or scootering and the parent or
guardian is subject to a $50.00 fine.
During a recent class meeting for the Class of
2012, the Freshmen Class chose the following helmets to submit
