Did you know that bunnies purr? Or that their teeth never stop growing? First grader Cecilee DaBiere taught her peers those fun facts and more while recently giving a presentation in Rachel Hicks’ class. It was part of a nonfiction book unit in which students explored how to read aloud like an expert. They picked nonfiction books to read, and then learned to mark interesting parts in the book, how to figure out how the book is organized and how to show the feeling in each part. Students then had the option to create a poster or a display on a variety of topics. They picked animals, cars, tsunamis, dinosaurs and planets, to name a few. Allison Spicci even brought in her pet, Rocky, a bearded dragon!
